Volkswagen Opens Orders for ID. Polo at $40,000; Affordable $29,000 Variant Promised Soon
Orders Open for Volkswagen's New Entry-Level EV
Volkswagen began accepting pre-orders for the ID. Polo on Wednesday, with prices starting at 33,795 euros (approximately $40,000). The automaker confirmed that a lower-cost version at 25,000 euros ($29,000) will follow shortly, though exact timing remains undisclosed.

“This is a strategic move to capture the mass market for electric vehicles,” said Dr. Helena Richter, automotive analyst at EV Insights. “The ID. Polo fills a crucial gap between premium EVs and affordable city cars.”
Background
The ID. Polo is Volkswagen's latest electric vehicle, positioned as the brand's entry-level EV in the ID series. It follows the larger ID.3 and ID.4 models, part of Volkswagen's ambitious $100 billion electrification push.
Initially, Volkswagen promised an electric car under 20,000 euros, but supply chain pressures and battery costs pushed the entry point higher. The $29,000 base model is intended to lower the barrier for first-time EV buyers.

What This Means
Volkswagen is betting on the ID. Polo to compete with rivals like the Tesla Model 3 and Chinese EVs such as BYD's Dolphin. The lower $29,000 variant could make EVs accessible to a wider audience, accelerating adoption in Europe and potentially North America.
However, critics warn that the $40,000 version may struggle against better-equipped alternatives. “The initial pricing risks alienating budget-conscious buyers,” said Thomas Müller, economist at Berlin Auto Research. “But if they deliver the affordable model quickly, Volkswagen could dominate.”
Volkswagen has not announced a release date for the $29,000 ID. Polo, but internal sources indicate a launch within 12 months. The company aims to produce the cheaper variant using local battery supply chains to reduce costs.
