Path Tracing Mod for Dark Souls 2 Goes Public, Adds Brutal Realism
Breaking: Dark Souls 2 Path Tracing Mod Now Available to All
The DS2LightingEngine mod has been updated with full path tracing support, making the decade-old RPG visually stunning—and significantly harder. The mod, created by user Ragevitamins, is now live on Nexus Mods for the Scholar of the First Sin edition.

Originally released on Discord in late February, the beta version gives players realistic lighting that transforms dark areas into near-total blackness. Background details below.
Expert Quote: 'Prepare for the Dark'
"If there is a cave without a possible light source, it means you must be prepared for the dark," said Ragevitamins, the mod's creator, in the DSLightingEngine Discord. The mod forces players to rely on in-game items like torches, Prism Stones, or the Cast Light spell to navigate.
"Path tracing will inevitably make Dark Souls 2 more challenging," Ragevitamins added, calling it "music to the ears of sickos" who crave extra difficulty.
Background: 12 Years of Modding
Dark Souls 2 launched in 2014 to criticism over its downgraded lighting compared to pre-release footage. Modders have spent over a decade restoring and improving those lost features. The DS2LightingEngine mod, first released in 2021, has now reached a major milestone with path tracing.
Pre-release demos showed dynamic lighting that was absent from the final game. This mod not only adds that lighting but also uses modern ray-tracing techniques to surpass the original vision.
What This Means for Players
Players who enable path tracing will face a darker, more punishing experience. Without light sources, caves and interiors become pitch black—forcing strategic use of items. The earlier non-path tracing version remains available for those who prefer easier visuals.
"It brings the often scrappy-looking RPG to life," noted the mod team, while acknowledging the beta may have some hiccups. The mod is a free download on Nexus Mods.
Performance and Compatibility
The mod works only with Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin. It requires a powerful GPU to run smoothly due to the computational demands of path tracing. Players with lower-end hardware may need to reduce settings or stick with the standard lighting version.
Community Reaction
Early footage from streamer LobosJr on YouTube shows the mod combined with randomisation, creating a chaotic but beautiful experience. The modding community has praised the update as a "great result" for a game long considered the black sheep of the Souls series.
Future Updates
Because the mod is in beta, further improvements are expected. The team plans to optimise performance and fix remaining bugs. Updates will be posted on the Nexus Mods page and the DSLightingEngine Discord.
